Volunteers helping kids catch waves at Day at the Beach

Community service

Three times a summer, club members and volunteers take kids and challenged athletes surfing at La Jolla Shores — then cook, serve lunch and make some good memories.

Day at the Beach · 2026

Thank you to every volunteer who shows up — not only to surf with the kids, but to cook, serve lunch and create good memories.

Ocean Advocacy & Youth Leadership

Founded by Jim Neri in 2014, the program brings WSC juniors, the Y-Strong Girls, the Kumeyaay Nation and local students into ocean science. The first class mapped Windansea’s bathymetry from sonar kayaks with San Diego State, built an ROV to study the kelp forests, worked with Scripps’ Coastal Data Information Program — and ran the Menehune themselves.

“I owe a lot to the Bathymetry project and the SDSU internship. Those projects catalyzed my interest in science and helped propel me to UC Berkeley and Environmental Engineering.”
Jordan Schultz, member since 2016

Club surfers pull out their biggest boards and SUPs to run water safety from La Jolla Cove all the way to Scripps Pier. (And who could forget the Joe Roper fish tacos?)

We man the very first water station — almost in the dark — and one of the last at La Jolla Shores.

04

Urban Surf 4 Kids Surf Off

A one-day contest run by local surfer Graham Allen that donates all profits to surf therapy for foster children.

Get involved

We need surfers in the water, cooks on the grill and friendly faces on the lawn. Can’t make it? Donations are much needed and appreciated.
